When installing a new system or selecting a system for a newly constructed home, the HVAC contractor should be expected to do a comprehensive evaluation of the premises and design the best possible HVAC system affordable. The square footage of the dwelling, its overall floor plan, the type of materials it is made from, and the type of heating or cooling system used will all contribute to the decision of which units to use and how to install them for overall performance. A report should be presented to the homeowner in writing and it should include alternative plans that allow some leeway in terms of the expense or scope of the project.
Rather than simply recommending only one idea, for example, a considerate contractor will offer three different versions of the same basic concept. One will include premium upgrades, while another will be slightly more affordable but still entirely adequate, and the third will be the least expensive and may provide slightly less efficient returns over the long haul but provide a more budget-conscious short-term solution.
Study a contract carefully before signing it and have an attorney review it. Regardless of how upbeat your first impression of a contractor may be the contract will stipulate the legal agreement and so it needs to be respected and scrutinized. It is always recommended that an attorney be used to interpret the contract and approve it as your legal representative. That helps to avoid any disagreements or misunderstandings of what the HVAC contractor is going to do, or financial mishaps by paying for the wrong service or service not rendered to your expectations.
Before hiring a contractor consult with them to ascertain how they approach a project. Have them show you examples of project outlines done for previous clients, if possible, so that you can see how thorough and easy to understand those bids and proposals are. You want to choose a pro who is meticulous and knowledgeable about all aspects of the job, but it is also important that you can understand what they are talking about as they explain their work to you. The best contractors have expertise in their HVAC field but they also have a gift for communicating highly complex information to laypersons who may not be at all familiar with the HVAC industry, nomenclature and standard operating procedures. Find one of those and you will have done yourself a great favor that will pay off immensely - in a variety of ways - for as long as you live in your home.
